This
full length mystery novel is written for young readers.
"Meow.org, The Cat-Napping Caper" features four
youngsters, each with a physical disability that sets them
apart from the mainstream kids in school. These clever friends
come together to solve a mystery of disappearing cats, and
to deal with the daily challenge of being different in a school
setting that isn't always kind.
They use the tools of technology and some special personal
abilities to first analyze the mystery, and then they set
a trap to catch the culprits. One of the youngsters, Elzbeth,
a red-haired girl with energy that often lands her in trouble,
manages to get herself trapped along with the cats. It's then
up to her friends to launch a rescue of both her and dozens
of cats. But, why would anyone want so many cats? The friends
solve this mystery too. But, will they be in time to save
Elzbeth?
Different Abilities
I had three goals in writing this mystery book and featuring
kids with physical disabilities. Most importantly I wrote
the book because I have always loved mysteries and think this
is a good and entertaining romp! I've made sure to include
humor and suspense, plus a surprise "treat" at the
end.
Secondly, I'd like mainstream young people to know that others
with physical disabilities have abilities that can
overcome many barriers. Without "preaching" I'd
like to teach kids about the cruelties of teasing and bullying.
This kind of behavior seems to peak in the middle school years,
and my children's mystery is aimed at youngsters just approaching
that peer-driven behavior.
Additionally, I want to give children with disabilities a
few interesting fictional heroes to enjoy. There are millions
of youngsters with physical disabilities in the U.S. alone.
Role models - even fictional ones - are important to everyone,
and I hope readers will find my characters inspiring and entertaining.
Making the Mystery Real
"Meow.org, The Cat-Napping Caper" has been read
and vetted by a medical professional, an educator, a licensed
psychologist who works with children and my best mystery critic,
an 11-year-old girl.
Reading Age: Mystery for young readers in the 4th to 6th
grade. It would be excellent for parents to read a 7-year-old
and then have a conversation anout the ideas and vocabulary.
Words of Praise for the
Mystery Book
"The
Catnapping Caper is a delightful and engaging book! The suspense
from chapter to chapter made it difficult to put down. The
author has used great sensitivity, humor and creativity to
write about children with different disabilities, the challenges
they face being teased and the heroic efforts they take to
live each day. As a licensed psychotherapist specializing
in working with children and families, I believe kids with
and without a disability, their parents, and educators will
enjoy reading this book. The Catnapping Caper builds a bridge
to greater understanding of what it means to be different."
